These are the most used units in the game, as these are or can be used in Factories, Farms, Foraging materials, etc... They are trained through the Command Center and though the building does upgrade, the workers do not. Making these units the weakest unit in the game... period.
Workers themselves are uselss on the field though their use is meant for work around the islands they still have the opition to attack enemies. With the stats they're given it would not be recommended.
